Sweet Almond Oil

Composition: The sweet almond comes from the tree prunus amygdalus var. dulcis in the family rosaceae, distinct from var. amara which is the bitter almond. (Reference one [R1], Petruzzello, 2026) A (sweet) almond is the seed inside a leathery hull of the almond tree fruit. Sweet almond oil can be produced using either cold or hot pressing methods of the sweet almond, (Reference two [R2], Almonds almond is a real all-rounder, n.d.) or solvent methods, which can disrupt the nutrient profile of the oil. (Reference three [R3], Almond, sweet - (prunis dulcis), n.d.) The seeds are separated from their shells and cleaned of impurities before being processed through mechanical extraction. The seeds are pressed where the oil is extracted and finished with various filtering procedures. The final filtered product is the sweet almond carrier oil.
The oil content of a single almond is generally half its weight but can range from as low as 40 percent to as high as 70 percent depending on cultivar. (Reference four [R4], Torabi et al., 2021) (Reference five [R5], Ferreria, 2017) (Reference six [R6], Kodad et al., 2008) Sweet almond oil is a non-volatile oil high in lipids called triglycerides. Other major and minor components of the oil include antioxidants like sterols and vitamins, tricylglycerols, squalene, minerals, and other minor components. The fatty acid profile of sweet almond oil shows major concentrations in oleic, linoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids (60, 15, 5, and 1 percent, respectively). The concentrations of fatty acids in the oil can range depending on cultivar. (Reference seven [R7], Fernandes et al., 2017) (Reference eight [R8], Colic et al., 2019)

Fun fact!
The almond is not a nut! Botanically, a nut is a dried fruit with certain characteristics. The almond and others are classified as drupes. The seed of the almond drupe is what we consume. Botanically the difference is small but almonds are not true nuts!
